Battlefield lasers
I've just seen a report from the US military that they have almost reached the so called 'magic power barrier' with thier solid state laser design that makes the possibility of battlefield lasers a distinct reality.

This all pretty spetacular sci-fi stuff and considering the duration of the reasearch pretty amazing that they are finally getting somewhere. Shame it will all be for zapping stuff in warzones rather than using it for stuff like mining, blowing up comets and asteroids about to hit us, zapping hostile alien motherships and that sort of thing....
