Magick
Was listening to Nervous teeth episode 72 last night and right at the end of the episode there was a short discussion on the works of Crowley and the idea of 'will' and ritualistic Magick.
I have had a brief look into some of this over the years and would urge some caution in practice.
Magick does work, rituals do work and Glyphs seem to be some of the most potent of the Magicians tools.
Unfortunately for the inexperienced or foolhardy you can almost try to run before you can walk with these things as I have found through personal experience. I would suggest for anyone, that you have to take a step back and understand why you are seeking what you are seeking before you try to obtain it through the use of magick. Sometimes when you obtain what you thought you desired it turns out it wasn't what you wanted at all and a steady slope of 'correcting errors' may occur (or at least it did with me...). In many ways this is what Crowley practiced but self understanding of motivation should come before enforcing will to materialise that end point.
I tend to view the idea now as magick as an aid not a means in general. Glyphs and my dabblings with them sort of, well, backfired quite spectacularly.....
For those interested Glyphs and their ritualistic creation are a good introduction into ritualistic magick but you must keep your eyes open to the effects as they may not necessarily be how you pictured the outcome. A good example with Valentines day on the horizon are love glyphs and love magick. You may find that the person of your affections or desires isn't reacting in the way you envisioned, they aren't throwing themselves at you with open arms. This is often the case but you will notice changes in manner with you, opportunities and situations will become more frequent to 'cement your love' but the person may be completely unaware of why they are feeling like this and react to it in ways very different to how you were expecting. Your ritual needs to have no ambiguity, love and lust are two very different things and lust/sex in ritual magick to create the glyph can be extremely potent.
Mmm maybe in my singlishness I should go ahead and do another glyph, no I think I'll listen to my own advice and air on the side of caution when it comes to rituals. Though the next time (whenever that's likely to be) a nice young lady spends the night at my place I'll have to give it a go again just to keep my hand in so to speak....
